Six Key Improvements in Bodhi Linux 2.0.1

It's been less than a year since I first wrote about Bodhi Linux 1.2.0, but already the popular ubuntu based Linux distribution has reached its second major milestone.

During the intervening time Bodhi has crept upward from No. 22 to No. 18 on DistroWatch's list of page-hit rankings, where it currently resides, and it's added a raft of new features. Not only that, in fact, but it's also launched versions for both 32-bit and 64-bit PCs.

Bodhi features the beautiful and lightweight Enlightenment window manager, and it's especially notable for its excellent customizability. Ready for a rundown? Here are some of the highlights you'll find in the new Bodhi Linux 2.0.

1. Built on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Whereas previous versions of Bodhi Linux were based on Ubuntu 10.04, version 2.0 is built on top of the latest Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS “Precise Pangolin” instead. Accordingly, the release's overriding goal “is to allow our distro to transition to the next major Ubuntu LTS as a distro base,” lead developer Jeff Hoogland explained in a blog post earlier this year.

2. 64-Bit Support

Along with Ubuntu 12.04 comes native support for 64-bit PCs. So, “Bodhi 2.0.0 is our first stable release to be offered in both 32- and 64-bit flavors,” Hoogland wrote in the recent release announcement.

3. Linux 3.2

Upgrading from version 3.0 of the Linux kernel, which is what was featured in Bodhi 1.2.0, the new Bodhi Linux 2.0 uses the Linux 3.2 kernel instead.

Whereas Bodhi 1.2.0 also used version 0.4.0 of the lightweight Midori Web browser, the latest release of the free and open source operating system uses version 0.4.6 instead. As in previous releases, the PCManFM file manager is included as well.

5. A Brand-New Terminal Emulator

Also included in Bodhi Linux 2.0 isTerminology, a brand-new terminal emulator launched earlier this year.

6. Bug Fixes Galore

Last but not least, just five days and some 15,000 downloads following the release of Bodhi Linux 2.0, the project's developers came out with Bodhi 2.0.1 to address numerous bug reports that came up in those first few days. So, fixes are now incorporated in that latest version.
